Pokémon Company Newsletters
Newsletters! We got ’em!
Beautiful, feature-length, content-rich Pokémon Company International (TPCi) email promotions to inform fans of the latest and greatest in the Pokéworld.
For years, this propaganda apparatus ran like clockwork. Between May 2014 and August 2016, TPCi pumped out precisely one colourful update every month. But then, in September 2016, the pattern broke as no newsletter was mailed out. Perhaps to compensate, players received two emails in November of that year – one to announce Genesect’s distribution as part of the year-round 20th anniversary celebrations, and one to broadcast the imminent release of Pokémon Sun & Moon. From there onwards, TPCi’s rhythm became more irregular, sometimes sending just one message, sometimes blasting inboxes thrice a month (e.g. February 2017).
Some curious newsletter facts:
– Throughout 2017, trainers received multiple newsletters touting the virtues of Pokémon GO in their headlines, e.g. in January (“New Pokémon Appear in Pokémon GO!”), April (“A New Wave of Pokémon GO Fun Is Here!”) and October (“Spooky Pokémon Originally Discovered in Hoenn Arrive in Pokémon GO!”). Oddly, however, the actual release of the mobile game didn’t even earn a mention in Summer 2016’s messages. Did TPCi naively assume that Pokémon GO wouldn’t be a big deal, let alone a breakout hit?
